The Argentine alfajor among the best sweets in the world

Chocolate, with jam and even peanut paste, one of the great protagonists of Argentine gastronomy is the alfajor. The candy that went on to be praised internationally, after being selected by the renowned cooking portal Taste Atlas. The renowned gastronomic platform builds its ranking based on the voting of its users from around the world.

The list considered the “argentinian alfajor” as the second best “cookie” (cookie) in the world, only behind an Algerian sweet. In the Top 100 you can see some desserts from various countries such as Italy, United States, Germany, Australia, China, Sweden and the Netherlandsamong others. Macarons, madeleines, polvorón, florentines, marranitos, chocolate chip cookie, amaretti, pernik and coyotas, are some of the sweets that were also part of the list of winners and represent the culinary tradition of many of the chosen countries.

According to Taste Atlas, the name alfajor comes from the Arabic word “al-hasu”, which means padding or padding. Although the cookies can be found throughout Latin America, they originate from Andalusia, Spain. When the Spanish arrived in America, they brought their food and over time, almost all the countries in the region have adapted the alfajor to make it their own.

In August 2022, the First Alfajor World Championship was held in the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, in which more than 150 Argentine and world producers participated with 350 samples. In the event, the alfajor from Mar del Plata “Miracles from Heaven” was awarded as “the best in the world”.
