PVDA chairman Raoul Hedebouw is not in favor of more military aid to Ukraine. “If it is economic support, I can live with that. But not with military support,” he says in an interview with ‘De Tijd’. The PVDA position on the Russian invasion often provokes criticism.
In brief: within two weeks there will be an additional European summit where member states hope to approve 50 billion euros in aid to Ukraine. That support package was blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban at a previous meeting. As EU President, our country will try to get that support through.
Opposition party PVDA is not keen on an additional support package for Ukraine. “If it is economic support, I can live with that. But not with military support,” says party chairman Hedebouw in an interview with the business newspaper ‘De Tijd’.
According to him, Europe must continue to look for a “diplomatic solution” and recognize the “neutrality of countries between Europe and Russia.” Hedebouw only believes in a “negotiated solution”. “The alternative is that we are heading towards World War III,” he warns.
The far-left party has been under fire for its position since the beginning of the conflict. PVDA, among other things, refused to approve resolutions that strongly condemned the Russian invasion. Some explanations have also been wrong several times in the past. For example, party leader Sofie Merckx received a lot of criticism after a striking statement in the context of the war. Asked whether Merckx would choose Vladimir Putin or Volodymyr Zelensky, she coolly replied: “Neither.”
