The Alternative, CDA and Local! core new coalition Vaals | 1Limburg

In Vaals, the parties Het Alternatief, CDA and Lokaal! at least be part of the new coalition. Together they account for 8 of the 15 seats.

But they will approach the three other parties to see if which of them can also become part of the new board.

‘Do not close the door’
“We would like to emphasize that we have absolutely not closed the door to other parties at the moment”, say Het Alternatief, CDA and Lokaal! in a joint statement. They say they have taken over the initiative because the coalition negotiations have so far yielded nothing and they don’t think it will happen.

For those talks, the new party Viva Vaals of former alderman and former councilor Thijs Jussen had taken the lead as the largest. She spoke with Nuj Lies Vroemen, CDA and PvdA.

Balanced
“A lack of trust between various parties does not seem to lead to a bridgeable and promising situation at the moment”, according to Het Alternatief, CDA and Lokaal!. That is why the three of them have decided to work together on what they call a balanced administrative situation.

Former alderman, councilor and party leader Lambert Jaegers (CDA) will lead that process. Jaegers is currently chairman of the Vaals CDA department.

Elections
In the elections, Viva Vaals became the largest party with 3 seats. The Alternative rose from 1 to 3 seats, the CDA kept its 3 seats. Local! was the big loser and dropped from 5 to 2 seats. Nuj Lies Vroemen and the PvdA won 2 seats, the same number as in 2018.

In Vaals, two more seats were available, 15 instead of 13. This was due to the fact that Vaals had more than 10,000 inhabitants on the reference date of January 1, 2021. This gave the municipality the right to two extra council seats.
