He Zayed Award for Sustainability is the world award for United Arab Emirates which recognizes excellence in sustainability. The distinction has recognized Argentine initiatives on other occasions. In 2022, the Mamotest company received $600,000 as an incentive for her work in the fight against breast cancer. In addition, in its last cycle, the Technical School No. 3 María Sánchez de Thompson was a finalist for its water quality diagnosis project.
“The Zayed Sustainability Prize helps organizations and high schools scale up their solutions, enabling them to achieve even greater impact and catalyze positive, transformative change. To date, the Award has impacted the lives of more than 378 million people around the world”, explained the Sultan Ahmed Al JaberMinister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the United Arab Emirates and Director General of the Zayed Sustainability Prize.
On this occasion, small and medium-sized businesses, non-profit organizations and high schools with sustainability solutions are invited to submit their candidacy for consideration in one of these five categories: Health, Food, Energy, Water and Secondary Schools. Nominations will be accepted until May 2, 2023 through the online portal of the Prize.
The $3 million prize fund rewards winners with $600,000 in each category. The Global High Schools category is divided into six world regions, and each school can claim up to $100,000 to start or further expand your project. The six world regions in the Global High Schools category are the Americas, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and East Asia and the Pacific.
“This year, the Award celebrates 15 years of honoring the legacy of the Founding Father of the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed, and accelerating sustainable development and humanitarian impact around the world. Since 2008, the Prize, thanks to the visionary leadership of the United Arab Emirates, has facilitated the provision of sustainable solutions to vulnerable communities, improving access to reliable and affordable energy, clean water, nutritious food and healthcare of quality for millions of people”, declared the Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology of the Arab country.
The previous cycle of the Award received a record number of 4,538 applications from 152 countries, which represents an increase of 13% compared to cycle 20. Among the 10 winners of the 2023 cycle, Latin America obtained the main award in the Health category; with the NGO Associação Expedicionários da Saúde (Brazil), as well as the representative school of Las Américas; The Bios Terrae ICAM Ubaté Foundation (Colombia).
His Highness Al Jaber added: “It is important to highlight that the Award has put youth first and empowers young people to lead sustainable development. Through the Global High Schools category, the Award provides opportunities for young people to develop their leadership and sustainability skills and encourages them to play an active role in supporting their communities and driving action for the weather.”
Inspired by the humanitarian and sustainability legacy of the UAE’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the award has recognized a total of 106 winners to date whose student-led school solutions or projects have positively transformed the lives of millions of people
