It has long been known that Mary Austin is one of the few to keep the secret of where Freddie Mercury’s ashes are buried. But the longtime friend of the Queen frontman did not want to reveal the reason for this.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Austin, who bequeathed much of his wealth to Mercury after his death in 1991, was more explicit.
“Fans can be deeply obsessed”
“He didn’t want anyone trying to dig him up like some famous people have,” she said. “Fans can be deeply obsessed – he wanted it to remain a secret and it will remain so.”
However, as Austin went on to say, the task was not quite that simple. “I didn’t want anyone to suspect that I was doing anything other than what I normally do,” she said of her secret mission. “I said I wanted to go to cosmetics. I had to be persuasive. It was very difficult to find the right moment. One morning I just snuck out of the house with the urn.”
