That’s how much it costs to be caught with an expired MOT

In Germany, every registered car has to be inspected by the TÜV every two years. If the regular main inspection (HU) is missed, there is a risk of costs, points in Flensburg and limited insurance cover.

Anyone who misses the TÜV commits an administrative offence

When it is that time again and the car has to go to the general inspection can be seen from the rear vehicle license plate, among other things: the number in the middle of the colored circle shows the year of the next general inspection. The number directly above it is the month in which the HU must take place. So that the badge can also be read from a distance – for example by the police – the color also shows the year (pink for 2023, green for 2024) and a black bar shows the month. The badge can be read like a clock, if the black bar is at the bottom, it shows “six o’clock” and the HU is due in June.

If you don’t bring the car to TÜV, DEKRA or another test center within the specified month, you commit an administrative offence.

The result is a fine of up to 75 euros and even a point in Flensburg

In the case of normal cars, motorcycles and light trailers, a fine of 15 euros applies if the specified HU period is exceeded for two months. After four months it is 25 euros and after eight months 60 euros are due and there is a point in Flensburg. In addition, the extended test, which the test centers always have to do if you have missed the HU period, costs a lot t-online usually 20 percent more than the normal HU. In addition, the insurance cover for damage that would not have occurred with a valid MOT can be omitted.

If you miss the HU for commercial vehicles with a mandatory safety check (e.g. trucks), 15 euros will be charged just one day after the period has expired, after two months it will be 25 euros, after four months 60 euros and a point in Flensburg and after eight months it will cost you the missed TÜV 75 euros and also a point in Flensburg. Of course, that only applies if you get caught.

What happens if you are not in Germany?

To avoid this, you can use a reminder service at most test centers. So you don’t have to think about the HU yourself, but are simply asked to bring the vehicle to the TÜV within a certain period of time. Incidentally, according to the ADAC, this also applies to vehicles that are unused on private property – all registered cars have to go to the TÜV. As long as nothing is broken, the cost of the examination is usually up to 100 euros.

If you are on vacation with your car abroad during the TÜV period, you do not have to come back to Germany for the general inspection: you can either have the general inspection carried out before the holiday or directly afterwards. If you choose the second option, you should be able to prove that the vehicle still had a valid MOT at the beginning of the holiday – otherwise there is a risk of a fine. After the holiday, the car must also be taken directly to the TÜV, otherwise there is a risk of a fine here as well.
