That’s how it was with Jeff Beck & Johnny Depp

On Wednesday (July 13th) Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp were guests at the Munich Tollwood Festival. Initially, however, the guitarist made music without his “very special guest” through the genres of rock, jazz and funk.

Beck delighted the 6,000 spectators in the sold-out music arena in a white shirt and light blue trousers with a white belt on his equally white Fender Stratocaster. The first and only words addressed to the audience came after 25 minutes when the Brit announced his interpretation of the Beach Boys classic “Caroline, No”. The 78-year-old showed his virtuoso game, but was otherwise very reserved, according to one concert review published by “Stern”.; the “Münchner Merkur” writes: “It fascinates how he lets the tones bubble, float and blur into each other.”

Johnny Depp fell in love – and red lingerie

After about 35 minutes, the first shouts from the audience could be heard: “Johnny! Johnny!” demanded individual guests. With strands of hair on his face, a cigarillo in his mouth and a leopard guitar slung over his shoulder, he finally entered the stage. As a result, cheers broke out, mobile phones were pulled out, red lingerie flew through the air. At such moments, it becomes comprehensible that Johnny Depp not only “won” the defamation lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard and a horrendous sum in damages a month ago – but also the hearts of the public.

Own and made own pieces

Back to the music: together both musicians played the sad-beautiful ballad “This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr” written by Depp – a tribute to the Austrian-American Hollywood diva and inventor of the same name. In translated words, Depp sang the line, “Wiped out by the same world that made her a star.” It was followed by the John Lennon cover of “Isolation” and a smashing rendition of the Killing Joke track “Death and Resurrection Show.”

Many of the songs performed were taken from Depp and Beck’s joint album “18”, which will be released on Friday (July 15). In addition to eleven cover versions, the long player also bundles two tracks penned by Depp – including the homage to Hedy Lamarr mentioned above and a song entitled “Sad Motherfuckin’ Parade”. About 40 minutes after Depp entered the stage, it was over in Munich.
