Textile workers in Bangladesh reject new minimum wage

The protests and strikes in Bangladesh continue. Last week, the country’s government announced that the new minimum wage for textile workers would be 12,500 taka, but this does not meet the demands of unions and workers.

With the new minimum wage of 12,500 taka (106 euros), workers’ wages will improve by around 50 percent. However, it is still far from a living wage for the conditions in Bangladesh. This is 23,000 taka (195 euros) – which is why the unions’ demand is at this level.

Due to the ongoing protests, textile manufacturers have now closed 150 factories in Bangladesh for an “indefinite period,” local media reported. The closures are a precautionary measure as previous protests have seen looting and vandalism. Over 70 factories were affected.
