‘Texel still tacks: still an emergency bridge to poorly accessible beach entrance’

Texel beach entrepreneurs can breathe a sigh of relief, because it looks like there will still be an emergency bridge over the car park of camping Kogerstrand to beach location Paal 20 in De Koog. Media partner Texel Courant has been told this ‘by various sources separately’. Installation is expected to begin at the end of this week.

The temporary bridge is expected to be there for some time, consists of a few elements and is intended for cyclists and pedestrians. For the time being, this seems to put an end to an issue that has been preoccupied for some time. The intention is that a new, permanent bridge will be built over the car park to beach pole 20 in the long term.

Road plates

There was a wooden bridge at the beach entrance, but it was demolished last year due to its poor condition. Beachgoers now have to walk to the beach via a staircase. However, this is difficult for those who have a wheelchair, pram or handcart. They must either walk over stelcon plates – which motorized traffic also drives over – or be lifted over the stairs.

The beach entrepreneurs had previously argued for a temporary solution, either by installing a temporary bridge or by replacing the rejected bridge for pedestrians only. That was not approved by the municipality: the new bridge would be on time.

Delayed

Last month it turned out that that promise could not be fulfilled. Although the material was there, the delivery of the necessary technical drawings delayed the job. The new bridge would only be built after the summer holidays. The entrepreneurs felt abandoned. “We are not being listened to,” beach operator Koen Witte told NH.

The entrepreneurs hoped that the much desired emergency bridge would now be built, and that seems to be happening. This emergency bridge will be wider than first proposed, so wider than 1.40 meters.
