Texas Supreme Court reverses decision: Kate Cox (31) cannot have an abortion | Abroad

The Texas Supreme Court reverses a judge’s decision to allow a pregnant woman to have an abortion.

Kate Cox (31) from Dallas is twenty weeks pregnant with a fetus with a fatal condition. A judge gave permission on Thursday to terminate the potentially life-threatening pregnancy. However, on Friday evening the Supreme Court put a stop to this, CNN and other American media report.

The Texas Attorney General had appealed the judge’s ruling that allowed the abortion. That state has had very strict abortion laws since the controversial Supreme Court decision in June last year.

It then ruled that the fifty states in the United States can individually determine whether or not they allow abortion. According to American media, the fact that Cox was right in her case against the state of Texas was very exceptional.

Abortion is allowed in Texas in very limited cases, for example when the mother’s health is at stake. However, doctors find the wording of the legislation too unclear and fear legal consequences. An illegal abortion can be punished with a prison sentence of up to 99 years and a fine of up to 100,000 dollars (approximately 93,000 euros). Doctors can also lose their medical licenses.
