Tested: This is the best mattress | living

What is the best mattress? And which one has the best value for money? The Consumers’ Association answers.

Your mattress plays an important role in your sleep. It must offer good support, allow moisture to pass through and, of course, lie comfortably. There are all kinds of fillings, such as foam, feather or latex. The price says little about the quality, according to the test.

The Consumers’ Association tests mattresses for, among other things, body support, moisture permeability and longevity. A total of more than sixty mattresses have been tested, which are available online.

An Emma mattress comes out on top in the test. A mattress from Meradiso (Lidl) is the Best Buy.

Best in Test: Emma O2 (Hard)

Price: 358 euros
Test verdict: 7.7
Mattress core material: A layer of cold foam, a layer of memory foam and a layer of cold foam on top
Maximum washing temperature mattress ticking: 60 °C

This Emma mattress is available in two firmnesses. The harder variant is the best in the test. There is also a medium variant, but it scores less well.

The Emma O2 (hard) does well on almost all parts. The strength lies mainly in the lying properties, such as pressure distribution, resilience and thickness. The mattress scores very well on all these points. But the expected lifespan is also very good.

The mattress allows sufficient moisture to pass through and the support is also in order. Back sleepers in particular, but stomach sleepers and side sleepers also receive sufficient support. So a good all-rounder.

You can remove the cover and wash it at 60 degrees. The mattress is delivered free of charge and the trial and return conditions are favorable.

A disadvantage is that you cannot turn the mattress. You can turn it from head to foot.

Best Buy: Meradiso (Lidl) 7-Zone Cold Foam Mattress (Hardness 2)

Target price: 120 euros
Test verdict: 7.2
Mattress core material: a single layer of cold foam
Maximum washing temperature mattress ticking: 60 °C

This mattress from Lidl is proof that the price does not have to say anything about the quality. He is dirt cheap, but scores well. Incidentally, this concerns the variant with hardness 2. There is also a variant with hardness 3, but it scores lower.

The strongest points of this mattress are durability and support. The support is especially good for stomach and back sleepers. For side sleepers, the support is average.

The lying properties are more than adequate, except for the pressure distribution. It’s on the edge. Opinions about comfort differ. Many people find the mattress too hard and uncomfortable. This is probably because it only has a cold foam support layer. A comfort layer of, for example, latex or memory foam is missing.

The moisture permeability is sufficient and just like with the Emma, the cover is removable and washable at 60 degrees. You can try it out for 90 days.

Unlike the Emma, you can reverse this mattress. You just can’t turn it from head to foot.

In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers’ Association. This is a collaboration between the independent editors of this site and the Consumers’ Association.

The Consumers’ Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad. The products being tested are store bought so they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How fast that is varies per product. The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating. This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better. The Best Buy is the product with the best value for money.

The stated price of a product is the lowest retail price currently known to the Consumers’ Association. But prices can vary per day. If no recent retail price is known, the target price is quoted.
