What is the best e-reader? And which one has the best value for money? The Consumers’ Association answers.
By: NU.nl/ConsumentenbondWould you like to read while on holiday, without having to carry books with you? An e-reader makes it possible. With an e-reader you read from a special screen. This reads almost like a real book and is not comparable to, for example, a tablet.
The Consumers’ Association tests e-readers for, among other things, screen quality, ease of use and ease of reading. More than twenty e-readers have been tested that are currently reasonably to well available.
An e-reader from Pocketbook comes out as Best in the Test. Due to the favorable price, this model is also the Best Buy at the same time. An e-reader from Kobo scores just as well, but is a lot more expensive. This one is only Best in Test.
NB: More e-readers came out as Best in the Test. Here we highlight the e-readers with the lowest price.
Best in Test and Best Buy: Pocketbook Touch Lux 5
This Pocketbook e-reader has been available for a while, but it still beats out many competitors. What is especially striking is the favorable price.
The screen is easy to read. Both outside, inside or in a dark bedroom. The letters are sharp and you can adjust the lighting evenly.
The Pocketbook fits comfortably in the hand. It feels thin and light and the housing is made of rubber. The scroll buttons make little noise and you can adjust the functions of the buttons if necessary.
The battery lasts a long time. No less than 26 days (with an average use of about two hours a day).
He also has some flaws. The screen is not very resistant to scratches. In addition, it is not water resistant. Most other e-readers tested are.
Best in Test: Kobo Libra 2
The Kobo Libra 2 scores just as well as the Pocketbook. It is a bit more expensive though.
The Kobo’s screen performs excellently, both outdoors and indoors. The screen is also very pleasant to read in a dark room. The contrast, sharpness and brightness are very good. You can adjust the lighting to your liking. The color of the light changes automatically. The color is hard blue during the day and warm orange at night.
The e-reader also feels good in the hand. You hold it with one hand and operate the buttons with the other hand. You can also rotate the screen (as with a tablet).
The battery lasts a lot less than that of the Pocketbook: about eleven days on a full charge. As with the Pocketbook, the screen is prone to scratches. Unlike the Pocketbook, the Kobo is water resistant.
accountability
In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers’ Association. This is a collaboration between the independent editors of this site and the Consumers’ Association.
The Consumers’ Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad. The products being tested are store bought so they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.
New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How fast that is varies per product. The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating, which is readily available. This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better. The Best Buy is the product with the best value for money.
The stated price of a product is the lowest retail price at the moment, as far as the Consumers’ Association is aware. But prices can vary from day to day. If no recent retail price is known, the target price is quoted.
