Less than a year after the debut of the fourth generation of Skoda Fabia, the range of the B segment expands to embrace the top of the range Fabia Sport Montecarlo, which combines sportiness and performance thanks to the engine to the comfort and practicality of the small Skoda family. 1.5 Tsi of the Volkswagen group. Designed for the most dynamic and demanding customers from the point of view of driving pleasure, we had the opportunity to try it in the Czech Republic, within the presentation event of the Fabia RS Rally2, the car designed to continue winning in the competitions that it replaces the previous Fabia Rally2 Evo, which in turn replaced the Fabia R5.

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo 1.5 Tsi: how it’s made, the design

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is placed at the top of the Skoda Fabia range with an even sharper and more marked design than that of the versions already in the range. The standard 18 ”Libra alloy wheels stand out. The grille, window frames, tailgate lettering and rear-view mirror caps are in glossy black while the bumpers have a specific design with larger air intakes and rear extractor profile. For the rest, the design remains that of a normal Fabia, with the front characterized by taut lines and fog lights separated by Full Bi-Led headlights. The rear is recognized instead by a clean profile from which you can see the roof of a different color from that of the rest of the bodywork.

The interior of the Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is distinguished by the headrests integrated into the seats. The passenger compartment is dominated by dark colors for the seat upholstery and the headliner, with specific elements in red, such as the gearshift fascia frame and the front door handles. The sporty design also features the multi-function three-spoke steering wheel, bevelled in the lower area and with paddles for manual shifting and the metal pedals. Some plastic clashes with the neat and lively interiors, with character, embellished by the carbon-like fascia that crosses the dashboard area horizontally. Active safety is guaranteed by the Front Assistant systems with automatic braking and pedestrian recognition and Lane Assistant for maintaining the lane together with the top-of-the-range headlights in Full Bi-Led technology. In terms of connectivity, the model is equipped as standard with an 8 ”dashboard screen, Dab + tuner, double Usb-C socket and protocols for the Apple Car Play and Android Auto smartphone interface. The presence of the native e-Sim allows you to interface with the car via the MySkoda app.

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is presented on the Mqb-A0 platform – the same that equips Volkswagen Polo – with dimensions from pure B segment: length of 4,125 mm, width of 1,780 mm, height of 1,459 mm and wheelbase of 2,564 mm, which also allows whoever exceeds 185 cm in height can sit back without any problem. The trunk is also at the top of the category with its 380 liters available which can become 1,190 by folding down the seats (the car is approved for 5 people). The novelty from the point of view of the set-up is that Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is lowered by 15 mm to emphasize the pleasure of driving in curves, with stiffer springs to improve road holding and handling. The links with the Wolfsburg manufacturer do not stop at the platform, however, because the four-cylinder 1.5 Tsi engine with 150 Hp of maximum power between 5,000 and 5,500 rpm and 250 Nm of torque between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. it is the same already seen on Volkswagen cars, starting with the Golf. Alongside a well-known and tried-and-tested engine, which has the deactivation of two cylinders during the soaring phase and when you touch the accelerator while maintaining a constant speed, there is the always precise 7-speed DSG automatic transmission. A combination that coupled with a curb weight of 1,224 kg triggers the Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo from 0 to 100 km / h in 8 seconds, with a top speed of 225 km / h.

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo 1.5 Tsi: how is it going

The route available to us for testing the Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is a mix of highway, urban and extra-urban, in the countryside around Mlada Boleslav. The taste of the Sport Montecarlo, in the hope of bringing you a more in-depth test soon, pushes us to take the consumption data with a grain of salt, with a survey of 7.5 liters / 100 km on about 20 km of road, from the moment that in this short section we have tried the different driving modes and also the performance of the 1.5 Tsi engine. So let’s start by judging the engine: snappy, awake, energetic and responsive. Progressive up to almost 6,000 rpm, after which it is useless to insist with the gear, better to change relying on the impeccable DSG, always intuitive and fast in climbing when you ask for maximum power. In Italy the car will arrive with paddles on the steering wheel, but the example tested in the Czech Republic presented exclusively the traditional lever, with logic for changing gear in the opposite way compared to what is seen on racing cars: pushing the lever increases the gear, pulling it back you climb. The opposite would have been better, as on sports and racing cars, Fabia RS Rally2 first and foremost. The 15 mm lower set-up and the adoption of harder springs translate into greater precision when cornering, greater handling and guaranteed fun, with a balanced set-up that is not devoted too much to sportiness, on the contrary. The comfort that distinguishes the traditional versions of Skoda Fabia can also be found on the top of the range, with enveloping seats especially in the lumbar area but still comfortable. Lots of buttons and controls for the infotainment: with a little practice you get to know everything.

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo 1.5 Tsi: at a glance

Skoda Fabia Sport Montecarlo is not a B segment sports car in the strict sense, but it comes close: the 150 HP 1.5 Tsi engine combined with the 7-speed DSG gearbox is fluid and reactive, able to take away satisfactions and overtake in total. safety. The chassis lowered by 15 mm emphasizes driving pleasure, without however depriving oneself of appreciable overall comfort. Already orderable at a price of 26,700 euros, the first deliveries are scheduled for after the summer.

Like it: attractive design; engine responsiveness, performance and behavior; spaciousness (both in the passenger compartment and in the trunk) for the category.

Do not like: some plastic too out of place with the gritty interior; not very intuitive gearbox, you push the lever to shift up and pull back to downshift (the opposite of sports or racing cars with sequential gearbox).
