Although they represent a more than negligible percentage of the market, multispaces are the only category of cars that can fully satisfy the needs of space and versatility. Dedicated to a few, therefore, but rather demanding and with some new models arrived in dealerships in recent months. Mercedes has developed the new T-Class: a project in collaboration with Renault (the base is the same as the Kangoo) but made more personal by tailor-made aesthetic elements and a sophisticated driving dynamics. Petrol and diesel engines divided into four power levels, a rich set of driving assistance systems and on-board entertainment entrusted to the well-tested Mbux. Prices in Italy from 26,450 euros.

Mercedes T-Class: how it is made

The appearance of a multi-space imposes certain limits on the creativity of designers: they prefer to maintain high practicality, easy accessibility and a large load capacity. Inevitably, therefore, the shapes can neither be too bold nor too slender. However, the T-Class manages to transfer part of the Mercedes personality to lines and shapes that are unusual for the luxurious Stuttgart brand. The front probably remains the most pleasant aesthetic element because it takes up exactly that setting already seen on other production vehicles. The grille and the headlights have a design which, despite having been adapted to a very different surface, does not betray its belonging to the Mercedes range. Even the technological component has not been neglected with an important novelty concerning the on-board entertainment system. The 7 “screen allows you to view Mbux contents: the hardware support changes (for dimensions and settings very different from the rest of the Mercedes) but not the software. You can therefore take advantage of the good connectivity functions, the excellent indications for navigation and full compatibility with Apple Car Play and Android Auto The organization of space moves away from recent proposals by proposing a more sober style without however neglecting ergonomics of use and rationality (the “empty pocket” compartments are really numerous). The instrument panel remains analog.

Mercedes T-Class: how are you doing

The engine that, in all likelihood, will best respond to the requests of Italian customers, is the 1.5 turbo diesel in the 116 HP version. With seven-speed automatic transmission. By choosing this configuration, you get really brilliant performance in the face of rather low consumption. During the preview, a hundred kilometers were traveled on mixed roads, with an average value recorded around 5.0 l / 100 km, for an average travel of 20 km / l. A good result considering the segment and vehicle category. The structure is solid, the suspension well calibrated to effectively absorb the roughness of the asphalt and the seven-speed automatic gearbox very efficient in engaging and downshifting at the right moment without unpleasant jerks. The feeling is that Mercedes has intervened to distinguish the T-Class from a simple collaborative project, bringing it closer to a more sophisticated and successful driving dimension. It is driven with good precision, without commitment and demonstrating great agility and good handling. Qualities that prove to be very useful on a multi-space intended for intense and very varied uses. The 116 hp are supportive when restarting, overtaking, making the ride fluid and elastic. On the other hand, the 1.5-liter diesel engine is now a very well-tested project (and also available in the 95 Hp version) that has already found numerous applications that have distinguished themselves for the high level of efficiency achieved in the face of more than acceptable performance. . Alternatively, you can choose the 92 or 130 hp petrol milletre, also in this case the automatic transmission is an option.

Judgement

Pleases: excellent versatility and practicality of use; the 116 HP 1.5-liter diesel engine is brilliant and ensures low fuel consumption; Mbux-based entertainment is a valid technological content.

Do not like: some interior details are made with rigid plastics; Mbux software support is an added value but the 7 “screen in the center of the dashboard is small.
