Tesla will soon make gaming with Bluetooth controllers possible in the vehicle

New update brings support for Bluetooth controllers

In June 2021, the US electric car company Tesla presented a wireless gamepad at the Model S Plaid Delivery Event that is reminiscent of a kind of combination of a PS5 controller and a steering wheel. The device features two analog sticks, four directional and four action buttons. In addition, the design includes a closed ring shape, which is obviously based on a car’s steering wheel and is probably intended for racing games.

As Not a Tesla App reports, very little new information has been released since the Tesla controller was announced. When asked on Twitter whether he would give the public any advance notice of the planned launch of a Tesla gamepad, Tesla’s Director of Design, Javier Verdura, responded with a resounding “Of course!”.

Although not much is known about the planned gadget, one can assume that it will be a controller that can be connected to the vehicle via Bluetooth and will cost between 50 and 80 US dollars. However, it is not yet clear when exactly the gamepad can be purchased. Introducing such a device would be another step in Tesla’s journey to upgrade its vehicles to full-featured entertainment systems. So far, gaming in a Tesla is only possible via wired and receiver-supported wireless controllers. According to Drive Tesla Canada, a Tesla employee said engineers are currently working on the technology and that games will be released once the fine-tuning of Bluetooth connectivity is complete.

Previous controllers may no longer work

However, until the time comes that Bluetooth-enabled controllers can be used in every Tesla vehicle, there will currently be a step backwards for customers. This is because some Tesla cars currently ship without the ability to transfer data from the front and rear USB ports, resulting in previously used controllers becoming unusable. According to Not a Tesla App, Tesla drivers affected by this issue can use the USB port in the glove box, but Tesla does not consider this to be a good user experience, which is why some games are not available in such vehicles. Instead, Tesla would rather concentrate on completing the new Bluetooth technology in order to be able to offer all customers the best possible gaming experience.
