SUVs and pickups dominate
The Toyota Corolla was the world’s best-selling car in 2022. With more than 1.12 million units sold worldwide, the Japanese automotive group was able to assert itself as the front-runner, according to Statista in a publication from early February 2023. In second place, with around 870,000 units sold, is the Toyota SUV RAV4, also a model from the Toyota brand. The US car manufacturer Ford sold the third most cars with around 790,000 units of the F-Series, of which around 654,000 sales are attributable to the USA alone, according to the magazine auto-motor-und-sport.de. Tesla holds fourth place with around 760,000 sales of the Tesla Model Y. In fifth place, with around 680,000 units sold, is the Toyota Camry, a classic notchback sedan and thus the only model in the top 10 that is not a pick-up or SUV. Other places in the top 10 are occupied by the Honda CR-V, the Chevrolet Silverado, the Hyundai Tucson, the Toyota Hilux and lastly the RAM pick-up from Chrysler. Compared to 2021, when manufacturers Toyota, Ford, and Honda also dominated the five best-selling models, the only big difference is that the Tesla Model Y is now a fully electric vehicle.
At first glance, it may seem surprising that despite drastically increased fuel prices and an increased awareness of the negative effects of climate change, the best-selling cars are almost exclusively large SUVs and off-road vehicles with high fuel consumption. However, the old image of SUVs as fuel-guzzling scumbags is long outdated. Hybrid and electric alternatives are already installed in many popular SUV models, which are very well received by customers.
New registrations in Germany increased again in 2022
According to the ADAC, new car registrations in Germany have risen for the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic in 2020. In 2022 there were 2.65 million new vehicle registrations, 1.1 percent more than in the previous year. However, that is still well below the pre-pandemic level of 2019, when 3.6 million vehicles were newly registered. The top three most popular new registrations in Germany all come from Volkswagen (VW Golf, VW Tiguan, VW T-ROC). The trend reversal towards alternative drives does not stop at Germany either. Every second newly registered vehicle in 2022 was operated with an alternative drive (electric, hybrid, plug-in, fuel, gas, hydrogen), 15.6 percent more than in the previous year. At the end of the year there was a real boom in buying e-cars, since the purchase premiums for e-cars expired or were reduced in January 2023. For the first time, the Tesla Model Y has made it into the top 10 new registrations in Germany, taking tenth place.
