Elon Musk himself, CEO of the American company, who landed in Germany on 21 March, attended the delivery of the first “German” Tesla. Also present was the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who declared that the factory is a sign of progress and an important step in the future of automotive companies. The American entrepreneur spread a message of thanks to Germany on Twitter for welcoming the company.

MUSK “WETS” THE MODEL Y

Elon Musk then participated in the delivery of the first Model Ys built in the new 5 billion euro plant. The 30 customers and their families received their vehicles, delivered through a glittering tunnel. “This is a great day for the factory. We have taken another step in the direction of a sustainable future,” said Musk. According to what was communicated, customers received a Model Y Performance, an SUV that has a price list of 63,990 euros with a range of 514 km. Other customers are expected to receive their Teslas starting in April.

THREE STEPS INTO THE FUTURE

The opening of the factory in Gruenheide, 35km southeast of Berlin, comes as Musk announced that it will soon present the Part 3 Master Plan, which will chart the company’s climb from a niche company to one of “extreme dimensions”. More than 3,000 of the 12,000 workers planned for the plant at full capacity have been hired so far. At full capacity, the new plant will produce 500,000 cars per year, more than the 450,000 battery-powered vehicles that Tesla’s main rival, the Volkswagen Group, has sold globally in 2021. The production capacity of the battery plant will be in capable of generating 50 gigawatt hours (GWh), surpassing all other plants in the country. JPMorgan has predicted that the factory will produce around 54,000 cars in 2022, increasing to 280,000 in 2023 and 500,000 by 2025. VW, which has already received orders for 95,000 battery-powered vehicles in Europe this year, is planning a new 2-car EV plant. billion euros next to its Wolfsburg factory and six battery plants across Europe. But its timeline lags behind Tesla’s, with the new Wolfsburg factory set to open in 2026 and the first battery plant in 2023.
