Tesla stock: Why the closure of the new German Tesla plant is good news

Tesla faced headwinds from multiple directions
The planned closure of the Grnheide plant serves to optimize production
Capacity is to be gradually increased

Things are not going well at Tesla at the moment: Even the largest electric car manufacturer in the world cannot escape the supply chain problem, corona-related production outages at the plant in Shanghai have caused a drop in delivery numbers and the charismatic company boss Elon Musk has come under criticism due to the quarrels surrounding his planned takeover of Twitter, his refusal to allow his employees to work from home and job cuts. In addition, there are various complaints from employees both about a racist working environment that Tesla does not adequately regulate and about non-compliance with the specified notice period in the event of redundancies.

Coupled with recession worries and a continuing downward trend on the stock market, all of these points have also been reflected in the performance of Tesla shares: Since the beginning of the year, the share certificate has lost more than 33 percent in value.

New bad news from Grnheide?

Now supposedly bad news comes from the new plant in Grnheide, Brandenburg. According to press reports, production in the new factory would have to be suspended. The plant would have to “close temporarily,” the “BILD” newspaper reported, citing a report by Teslamag that was published in May.

However, the fact that the plant has to close again just a few months after its official opening has organizational reasons and should ultimately be beneficial for the business development of the US group. Apparently, the ramp-up of production in the new production facility is progressing more slowly than hoped, which is why they now want to turn a few screws to optimize production in Grnheide.

According to Teslamag, 86 Model Y Performance are currently rolling off the assembly line there every day – not enough to meet the current strong demand and the pre-orders that have already been confirmed. This is also due to the fact that the work at the individual production stations was calculated at 90 seconds, but actually takes twice as long, the magazine continues. In order to optimize this, production in the factory is to be paused for two weeks from July 11th in order to be able to subsequently increase production figures through a major conversion of the factory.

Employees would not be needed during this time, but should all return to their jobs two weeks later, Teslamag said in an update to the report. In addition, the company intends to further increase the number of employees in Grnheide as planned. The cycle time at the stations is to be halved from 90 to 45 seconds, which would require new, additional employees.

The fact that Tesla wants to close its factory in Grnheide for two weeks is not new bad news that joins the list of headwind factors for Tesla, but is due to problems with the ramp-up of automobile production. Tesla had also reported problems with ramping up production in the US plants due to strong demand. CEO Elon Musk had already communicated before the plant opened that the factory in Grnheide would only reach its planned capacity of 500,000 Model Y annually over time.
