Tesla share: Tesla vehicles from a German factory with quality defects?

The quality of the first Tesla vehicles from Grünheide is not completely convincing
Buyers target cosmetic flaws
Musk advises against buying during production ramp-up

After around two years of construction, the Tesla factory in Grnheide near Berlin was officially opened in March. Tesla boss Elon Musk himself, who was present at the opening, handed over the first 30 brand-new vehicles to their new owners. But while premiere buyers appear to be happy with their vehicles, Tesla owners who received delivery of later-produced vehicles that weren’t exclusively refurbished for premiere day apparently didn’t always have a smooth ride. There was initial criticism of the quality of the Teslas built in Grnheide on social networks.

Drivers criticize in social networks

With reference to customer feedback in social networks, “Teslamag” reports on possible quality problems with vehicles from the German factory. “This is my SpreEEwaldGurke,” wrote a user named Tim Ole Hype in a “TESLA Model Y Group” on Facebook, in which he said he was “completely happy and incredibly disappointed” about his new Tesla vehicle. Specifically, he complained that during the “cat wash” apparently small stones and sand had been actively rubbed into the paintwork. There are “slimy residues of grease everywhere”.

A new owner of a Tesla from Grnheide also criticized the quality of his vehicle on Twitter.

The quality of the German Teslas is “really not good”. The pictures in his tweet show, among other things, irregular gaps between body panels, and the tailgate of the Model Y Performance is apparently a bit outwards. However, the main criticisms were cosmetic defects, the vehicle would drive well. “The acceleration is amazing”, the vehicle is “fun overall”. Only the quality is a little disappointing.

Tesla repeatedly criticized for quality problems

The US car manufacturer has repeatedly had to contend with criticism of the quality of its vehicles. In particular, the vehicles from the China factory, which was built in record time, were repeatedly the target of complaints. Apparently, the Model 3 did not always meet the quality requirements of the buyers either. Elon Musk even acknowledged the quality issues himself. In an interview with the US car expert Sandy Munro, the company director confirmed that there had indeed been quality problems with his vehicles, particularly with regard to the paintwork. Musk pointed to the time pressure Tesla was under during the start of Model 3 production, the paint just didn’t have enough time to dry. Criticism of the seats of the early Model S and the gap dimensions is also justified, Musk had shown self-critically in the interview.

In his opinion, buying a vehicle that is ramping up production is not recommended against this background. During this time, you have problems making “every little detail” perfect, he emphasized. Then you are in a kind of “vertical ascent mode”.

The production ramp-up in Grnheide is currently in full swing. In the first half of the year, 30,000 Tesla vehicles are to leave the halls of the German plant. At full capacity, Tesla is targeting a production capacity of 50,000 vehicles per year for the factory.
