The head of the Department of Business and Made in Italy in a hearing in the Chamber opened up to Elon Musk’s arrival in Italy with a factory: “Stellantis alone is not enough to guarantee the production of a million cars a year”
“The citizens of Grüenheide, Germany have rejected a plan to massively expand the European assembly plant in Tesla and this will certainly involve a group decision.” Here is the sentence that marks the speech of the Minister of Business and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, during a hearing in the Productive Activities Committee of the Chamber. Urso himself anticipates the consequence: “We have been talking with Tesla for months and we are having very positive feedback, but it is a process that requires prudence”. The announcement comes at the end of a speech where the mandatory objectives set by the government for the sector in Italy, i.e 1 million cars produced every year by 2030, to which to add 300 thousand light commercial vehicles. “It is impossible for Stellantis to achieve these objectives alone and therefore we need a second manufacturer” reiterates Urso, who however lightens the pressure on the announcement by still leaving more doors open: “We have started discussions with productions from various countries, not only oriental but even Westerners. Three leading Chinese companies have already come to Italy, showing interest in our availability, even visiting places where they can build new possible factories.”
Global defense

While waiting for new entries into our country, the government leaves the channel of dialogue with Stellantis open: “It is essential to work towards reaching an agreement by consolidating their national supply network and ensuring that the group withdraws from the temptation to transfer production abroad as emerges from the same communication that the group would have sent to the component companies, i.e. withdraw from the internationalization plan”. The point is naturally the defense of the entire ecosystem that revolves around the production of vehicles, underlines Urso. “The Italian components industry is made up of 2000 companies that employ 167 thousand workers. But, broadening our gaze to the supply chain, the 5,500 companies have 273 thousand direct employees in production activities and 1,200 thousand indirect employees. All of this generates 90 billion euros in turnover, representing 9.9% of the manufacturing sector with a 5.2% impact on GDP”.
