Job cuts would mainly occur among employees who are not involved in production. Rivian currently employs more than 14,000 people. 5 percent may have to fear for their job, the sources said.
Rivian is active in its home market in California, Michigan and Illinois, among others, where it has production locations. In addition, the company is located in Canada and the United Kingdom.
Challenger Tesla
To cope with the increase in production, the company’s workforce has practically doubled in roughly a year. The company makes electric pick-ups and sporty all-terrain vehicles, among other things. In November, Rivian went public with the company emerging as a major challenger to Tesla.
Supply chain disruptions and parts shortages have reduced production. In addition, consumers are deterred by the high prices of the vehicles, which depress sales.
The big question remains whether Rivian will award the car production contract to VDL Nedcar. The Dutch company is looking for a successor to BMW, which had cars made in Limburg in recent years. According to De Limburger, the car manufacturer and the parent company are busy with a plan B and C, should Rivian drop out as a successor.
