BVB ruined the start of the 2023/24 Champions League season and lost 2-0 at Paris Saint-Germain. Coach Edin Terzic was much more bothered by his team’s performance than the result.
“We can put it nicely and say that the respect was too great. Or we can address it clearly and say that we weren’t brave enough in the first half. We imagined it differently,” Terzic criticized the BVB professionals after the game Final whistle on “Prime Video”.
The requirement was to repeatedly involve the PSG players in duels. “Over the course of the second half you realized how many balls you can win if you’re willing to jump three meters,” said the coach. However, his team did not implement this well in the first half.
Terzic criticizes BVB defensive behavior before the 0:2
“In the first half we didn’t like the fact that we gave the ball away too quickly. There were great spaces that we didn’t use enough. We had what felt like a passing rate of 60 percent. That means every second ball is gone again. And then you start all over again, have to defend again and then at some point you don’t have the strength,” said Terzic, analyzing another problem with his team.
The coach was particularly annoyed by Dortmund’s defensive behavior before Achraf Hakimi’s 2-0 defeat. With two beautiful, yet simple one-twos, the Parisians outplayed the entire black and yellow backline. “We have discussed these one-twos. If you make these mistakes in the Champions League, you will be punished coldly,” said Terzic.
In the end, it was simply “clearly too little,” the coach added: “We started too late to show this courage. But it’s in us. But today it was too little and too late. That’s what we have to take with you.”
