Liverpool FC is fulfilling a heartfelt wish for the terminally ill Swedish coaching star Sven-Göran Eriksson and bringing him into a Reds coaching team for at least one day.
As the club announced on Tuesday, Eriksson will be in action for the Liverpool legends’ game against Ajax Amsterdam at Anfield on March 23rd.
Former England coach Eriksson, who is terminally ill with pancreatic cancer, recently reported in an interview about his love for the club and said he would have liked to have been Liverpool coach one day. Reds team manager Jürgen Klopp reacted with emotion and offered to make this possible, at least symbolically.
“The only thing I can say is that he is absolutely welcome to come here and he can sit in my seat in my office and do my job for a day if he wants. That’s no problem. At the Standing on the sidelines might be a little more difficult,” Klopp said.
Eriksson was team manager of Leicester City and Manchester City in England, but things never worked out with the Reds. Now he can join the former club legends John Barnes, Ian Rush and John Aldridge as a coaching quartet for the club he loves.
Millions in donations are collected at the annual charity game for Liverpool’s veteran stars.
