The coaching staff and medical services meet this Monday to assess the goalkeeper’s situation
Conservative treatment is not giving results and the possibility of surgery will be considered.
Ter Stegen has not played again since the national team break in November began, when he returned from training with Germany to Barcelona due to lower back problems. Although, initially, a conservative treatment was chosen and there was some optimism that the discomfort would subside, the German goalkeeper has already had three games in which he has not been able to play for Barça.
The secrecy around low back pain that Marc-André suffers from is total, but the idea, since I returned to Barcelona from the German team, was to carry out a conservative treatment based on physiotherapy and rest in order for the pain to cease. As time goes by, the goalkeeper is still unable to train normally along with the rest of the squad and has been absent against Rayo, Porto and Atlético.
Xavi hinted that he will not be in the next game that faces his team against Girona either: “He has discomfort and has not finished doing cleanly,” said the coach. That is why a meeting is planned this Monday between the coach’s own team and the medical services to assess the situation and decide the next step to follow. Among the options being considered is the possibility that Ter Stegen will finally have to undergo surgery to permanently solve his lumbar problems.
Nothing has been 100% decided yet, but once it has been proven that conservative treatment does not provide the expected results, the time has come to consider other options.
