Ter Doest walk in Lissewege

Charlotte is going to see what’s left of Ter Doest in Lissewege† She meets Benoit Delaey, who can tell her more about it.

Today, only the barn of the medieval abbey of Ter Doest remains. Geophysical research by Ghent University now shows that the underground remains of the historic Ter Doest abbey are remarkably well preserved. Recent research shows that the remains of the 900-year-old abbey are remarkably well preserved.

Just below the surface you can read the complete floor plan of the abbey. Archaeologists from Ghent University discovered by means of geophysical measurements: with a quad bike and geophysical sensors they scanned the meadows east of the abbey barn. This research shows that the suspected abbey remains are clearly present (not visible with the naked eye but at a shallow depth) and indicates a number of opportunities for further research of the Ter Doest site.
