In a week of political proposals and adjustments in the asylum chain, it remains too busy for the fourth day in a row in the registration center in Ter Apel.

Last night 41 people slept more than for which there is an official place, and so the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has to pay 50,000 euros again to the municipality of Westerwolde.

After ten months of relative rest, more than 2000 people in the center have been regularly staying since 9 September. This was the eighth time and so the bill now stands at 400,000 euros.

In order to cope with the crowds, outgoing asylum minister Mona Keijzer (BBB) yesterday announced that he immediately moved narizers from AZCs to a family member with a residence permit in a home. Although those small houses are not suitable for that, she wants to make room in AZCs.

On Monday, the Council of State (RVS) issued negative advice on Keijzers Law to prohibit the priority of assigning social rental properties to status holders. The BBB person responded the same day that she will continue her plan.

At the moment there are 18,800 status holders in the shelter. Now, according to the COA, an average of 6 to 10 percent of all released social rental homes in municipalities goes to status holders. That will be less with Keijzers Law, partly because these people are not registered with housing associations for years and will therefore come to the bottom of the registration list. This leads the law to unequal treatment and therefore it is contrary to the Constitution, according to the RVS.

Also outgoing asylum minister David van Weel (VVD) announced on Tuesday to suspend the list of safe countries of origin until June 2026 after a judgment of the EU-Hof. As a result, the accelerated asylum procedure for people from those countries will also disappear and so they will take the IND more time.
