Tens of thousands of Russians affected by heating failure | Abroad

In many Russian cities, the supply of heating, water and electricity has failed due to cold and outdated pipes. According to Russian media, tens of thousands of people have been affected.

In the Siberian metropolis of Novosibirsk, a main pipe broke, meaning that hot water and heating are no longer possible in more than 100 homes and 12 other buildings, according to the local medium ‘Sibirski Express’. The water from the district heating pipe flowed over a major road at -15 degrees.

According to the portal ‘rosteplo.ru’, a day earlier, 3,000 people in the port city of Vladivostok were left without heating. In the nearby town of Nakhodka, 6,000 people were killed. There were also problems in Yekaterinburg, Volgograd, Saratov and Pensa. In Saint Petersburg, the break in the district heating pipe was said to have been repaired on Thursday morning.

An official from the neighboring city of Podolsk has also been arrested in Moscow. On January 4, the heating plant of a munitions factory was out of order. The plant also supplies heating to 170 large buildings. The heating failure affected around 20,000 people.

The heating problems irritate Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is seeking a fifth mandate in the presidential elections in March.
