Friends of the mother and daughter who were killed this week by a gunman in Rotterdam have set up a fundraiser for the family’s three remaining children. And the Netherlands immediately showed its heart: more than 50,000 euros were deposited in one day and that amount is increasing faster and faster.
Marlous (39) and her daughter Romy (14) were at home on Heiman Dullaertplein in Rotterdam when they were shot by a frantic neighbor on Thursday afternoon. The man then went to the Erasmus Medical Center, where he also killed a teacher. A short time later the police were able to arrest him.
Marlous was a single mother with four children and three of them are now orphaned. It concerns Romy’s twin sister, an older sister of 17 years old and a younger brother of barely 5.
Heartbreaking
Having friends immediately after the fact an online crowdfunding set up to support them financially. “In this heartbreaking time, we have a duty to come together as one community and show solidarity to the relatives,” the De Vries family said.
Romy’s best friend is also not forgotten. She saw everything happen. However, she remained unharmed because she was able to take shelter under a table. “She not only survived the physical violence, but also carries the emotional burden of the unimaginable. Her road to recovery will be long and difficult and help is essential to support her in this dark time,” according to the initiators.
They assure that the money will go directly to the relatives and that everything will be transparent. “Together, let’s prove that the power of compassion and caring is stronger than any tragedy. As a community, let’s show that we are there for each other in difficult times. Together we can lighten their burden and provide a beacon of hope for a future that, despite everything, can be rebuilt.”
A neighbor of the affected family asks on X – the former Twitter – to support the action. He is extremely affected by the tragedy. “I spoke to my neighbor every day,” says David.
“As single parents we shared joys and sorrows,” he continues. “Three of her children remain behind. A 6 year old child (sic), friend of my son and child at home. A 14-year-old girl (twins until yesterday) and an older sister who sometimes babysat for us. We all know how harsh our society is and how poor the help is for those who need it. Therefore, donate to this crowdfunding. For a house, an education and the psychological support that these children need.”
