The US Open is the last Grand Slam tournament of the year in tennis. Two German stars are missing, the defending champion is a Russian who is also considered a favorite again.
When and where?
The men’s final is scheduled for September 11, or 9/11 as the Americans call it. The tournament ends on the memorial day for the almost 3,000 people who died in the attacks on the two towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, among other things.
The tournament will start on Monday (29.08.2022) at 11 a.m. local time, in Germany it will then be 5 p.m.
The game is played inBillie Jean King National Tennis Center” of the US Tennis Association, which is near the airport “John F. Kennedy” in the New York borough of Queens.
defending champion
The women’s competition ended in 2021 with a big surprise. Emma Raducanu, an 18-year-old qualifier from Great Britain, won the final in straight sets against Leylah Fernandez of Canada, who was almost the same age.
The men’s final was also a smooth affair. The Russian Daniil Medvedev won 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 4 against the Serbian Novak Djokovic, who eliminated Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.
favourites
For women, the world number one Iga Świątek from Poland is the favorite, even if she failed in the round of 16 in 2021. However, numerous other players are also given title chances, including Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka as well as Simona Halep, Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka. Defending champion Raducanu has suffered many setbacks this year. Only a few trust you to win the title again.
Unlike Wimbledon, professionals from Russia and Belarus are allowed to participate despite the war of aggression against Ukraine. Medvedev is allowed to defend his title, and he is quite confident of being successful.
Should Novak Djokovic start (he is not allowed to enter the country as an unvaccinated person, but has not yet officially withdrawn), he is also one of the favorites, as are Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz. 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz is also given opportunities. His Spanish compatriot Rafael Nadal didn’t seem really fit recently after his injury, but that doesn’t have to mean anything for him.
Cancel
Angelique Kerber, the winner in New York in 2016, is pregnant and therefore announced on Wednesday (08/24/2022) that she will be absent from the 2022 edition. Otherwise there were no significant rejections among the women.
Alexander Zverev, who does not want to take any risks after his serious foot injury, is missing from the men’s team. With Roger Federer, Gael Monfils and the 2.11 meter tall local hero Reily Opelka, other prominent professionals will miss the tournament.
prize money
In the days leading up to the tournament, it’s hardly worth converting the record prize money of more than 60 million US dollars into euros. The course fluctuates around parity, i.e. an exchange ratio of one to one. For comparison: On September 12, 2021, one euro still cost 1.18 US dollars. So 60 million US dollars would not even have been 51 million euros.
The 2022 women’s and men’s singles title winners will each be rewarded with $2.6 million. At least 1.3 million dollars are earmarked for the finalists. The doubles winners will receive $688,000 as a team.
draw
The results of the draw will be announced on Thursday (08/25/2022), probably in the early evening German time.
German participants
Some German professionals, including Tamara Korpatsch and Jan-Lennard Struff, are still qualifying. It is therefore not yet certain how many players will be represented in the main draw.
