Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia has to cancel her start at the WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico, due to serious hand injuries.
Like the world number 18. announced on Instagram that she ended up in the hospital after an ugly shower accident in her hotel.
“When I wanted to get out of the shower, the door just slammed open,” wrote the 27-year-old.
The glass pane literally exploded and the French Open semi-finalist sustained several deep cuts that had to be treated in the hospital. As “proof,” the former world number ten showed a photo of her doctored hands.
“After the horror, I’m fine again. That could have been more serious,” wrote Haddad Maia: “But it will take a few days until the wound heals.”
The tournament, which is endowed with almost 2.5 million dollars and belongs to the highest category below the Grand Slam competition, is not under a good star anyway: only two top 10 players made the trip to Mexico, and number one is seeded the world number seven Ons Jabeur from Tunisia.
