Tennis: Sinner defeats Zverev-Schreck Medvedev

Tennis professional Jannik Sinner won the prominent ATP tournament in Beijing for the first time in his career. In the final in the Chinese capital, the Italian beat Daniil Medvedev from Russia in a high-class game 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (7:2). For Sinner it was his first victory over his feared opponent in the seventh attempt.

The 22-year-old South Tyrolean, who next week will be the first Italian since Adriano Panatta in 1976 to move up to fourth place in the world rankings, had already defeated Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) in the semifinals. He celebrated his ninth title on the tour. Medvedev, however, missed catching up with Alexander Zverev with his 21st tournament victory.

Medvedev, who beat the Olympic champion in straight sets in the semifinals, struggled from the start. Sinner dominated most of the rallies and ultimately gave his opponent no chance in the tiebreak.

On the way to his third tournament victory this year after his triumph at the Masters in Toronto and the tournament in Montpellier, Sinner also impressed with his strong service in the second set. He won four of his six service games to zero.

At the 500 tournament in Beijing, with the exception of US Open winner Novak Djokovic, a large part of the world’s elite played. The next big event on the tour, in which the two finalists will also be competing, is the Masters in Shanghai, which started on Wednesday.
