A fine performance by Jesper de Jong. The 23-year-old tennis player has reached the second round of the Australian Open. The Hoofddorp native made his debut at the Australian Open and defeated the Argentinian Pedro Cachin (ATP-72) in four sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4).
Reaching the main tournament was a dream come true for De Jong. In the past two years, the Dutchman failed three times in the final qualifying round. The draw in Melbourne was not disappointing, with the Argentinian Cachin, the Dutchman already created opportunities for himself in advance.
Comeback
After losing the first set, De Jong recovered and got into the match. In the second set he worked his own breakpoints away and struck in two games against the South American. In the third set, the North Hollander quickly took a 5-1 lead. De Jong missed the first chance to serve out the set, but still took the third set 6-3. In the fourth set, De Jong made the break in the third game, which he never relinquished.

De Jong’s dream week will thus have a fitting sequel. After passing the qualifying tournament and winning the first round, a great clash awaits in the second round. The Hoofddorp native will then face world champion Jannik Sinner, the current number four in the world. Sinner eliminated Botic van de Zandschulp last night. The Italian had already finished with the North Hollander in three sets.
