tennis | Petkovic in Hamburg in the round of 16

Andrea Petkovic was the first German tennis player to reach the round of 16 at the European Open in Hamburg. The 34-year-old last year’s finalist defeated Tamara Korpatsch (27) from Kaltenkirchen in the first round in 80 minutes 6:3, 6:3.

In the round of the top 16, eight seeded Petkovic now has to deal with the Japanese Misaki Doi.

The young hopes Eva Lys and Marko Topo had previously been eliminated. The 20-year-old Lys was beaten by the Argentine Maria Carle in 2:28 hours on Monday 5: 7, 6: 3, 2: 6. The Hamburg native was too inconsistent to reach the round of 16 for the first time at Rothenbaum.

The 18-year-old qualifier Topo lost his opening game to Alex Molcan from Slovakia 5:7, 3:6. The Munich player has played for Serbia in the past and has been playing for Germany again since this summer.

A total of eleven German professionals are in the main draw at the ATP and WTA clay court tournaments. For the first time since 1978, men and women compete in parallel at the Rothenbaum.
