Tsisipas in form check
Things are going well in Madrid so far for the 2019 finalist. He wrestled Dominic Thiem in three sets after a bye, impressing with 39 straight first serves to field. After another three-set success against Sebastian Baez, it was a relatively quick affair against the Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles. But the 6: 3, 6: 1 hides the fact that the Greek had to give up the serve three times against the Spaniard. Ultimately, the winners with the backhand longline were decisive for the clear success. Tsitsipas, number four, wants to use this remedy again against Struff.

Direct comparison
Struff should be encouraged by the last appearance against Tsitsipas in 2019, which he won in Barcelona. It was the only encounter between the two on clay. In the overall balance, the Greek leads 3: 2. After a changeable start to the year he got back on track. In Monte Carlo, Tsitsipas was also in the quarterfinals, losing to Taylor Fritz there. He then advanced to the Barcelona final where Carlos Alcaraz was too strong.

How far is Struff going in Madrid?
Now Struff has reached his second Masters quarterfinals in a row and his only third ever. The Warsteiner had actually lost against Arslan Karatsev in the qualification, but still moved into the main draw as a lucky loser. There he was able to take well-known ATP opponents out of the race with Lorenzo Sonego, Ben Shelton, Dusan Lajovic and Pedor Cachin. The German had to go three sets in three of the games, which could have cost him strength.

Struff in shape
Jan-Lennard Struff has been riding a wave of success not just since this week and, as number 65, has been back in the top 100 since the Madrid week. At the beginning of the year he played more on the Challenger Tour, where at least two semifinals jumped out. At the Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami he then reached the 2nd round before it went on clay, where he was knocked out in round one in Marrakech and Munich, but played great at the Masters in Monte Carlo. Only the later winner Andrey Rublev wrestled him down in the quarterfinals.
