Altmaier was lucky in the draw – so far he has not met a player from the top 80 in Madrid. That changes today, with Borna Ćorić the 24-year-old from Kempen now even meets the 20th in the world rankings. The Croatian has already attracted attention during the tournament with victories against Hubert Hurkacz (#15) and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (#35).

Altmaier surprisingly in the quarterfinals
Daniel Altmaier has already achieved something historic: As the first professional since Miomir Kecmanović in Indian Wells 2019, the German made it into the top eight as a lucky loser in a Masters tournament. After losing the opening match against Jurij Rodionov, he beat Oscar Otte, Yannick Hanfmann and Jaume Munar in a row without dropping a set.
