Tennis: Men’s tournament for another 15 years at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum

Tennis in Hamburg has a long tradition – and it will continue. The ATP has extended the license of the German Tennis Association (DTB) for the men’s 500 tournament for 15 years.

“It’s planning security that we’ve never had for so long. And that’s also great news for the DTB, for tennis fans and also for the tournament location Hamburg,” said DTB President Dietloff von Arnim to the NDR. Previously, the license was valid up to and including 2023.

Organizer after 2023 still unclear

Next year, the ATP tournament will again be hosted by the Austrian official Peter-Michael Reichel and his daughter Sandra, who also acts as tournament director. The DTB has signed a contract with them that is valid up to and including 2023. It is still unclear what will happen after that.

“We have an existing partnership for 2023. We will announce early on who will be the organizer in 2024,” said von Arnim. This year, among others, the later US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz played in Hamburg and only lost to Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the final.

Future of combined event not yet clear

In 2022, for the first time in 44 years, men and women played at the same time at Rothenbaum in Hamburg. This was possible because the license for the 250 women’s tournament lies directly with the Reichels, so they are responsible for hosting both tournaments this year and next. Should the DTB look for another organizer for the men’s competition after 2023, two tournaments would probably take place at different times again.
