Tennis player Tatjana Maria reached the round of 16 at the WTA tournament in Cleveland.

Germany’s number one defeated France’s Varvara Gratscheva 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in their opening match at the dress rehearsal for the US Open, which begins on Monday in New York.

Meanwhile, Dominik Koepfer is in the round of 16 of the ATP tournament in Winston-Salem/North Carolina. The 29-year-old defeated the American Strong Kirchheimer 6:3, 6:2 and now meets the winner of the match between Jiri Lehecka (Czech Republic) and Mitchell Krueger from the USA.

Maria plays fifth-seeded Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine in the round of the top 16. The 36-year-old won the Challenger tournament in Barranquilla/Colombia on Saturday and climbed to 49th place in the world rankings.

Maria is the last remaining German in Cleveland after Tamara Korpatsch lost in round one against Mirra Andrejewa (0:6, 6:3, 5:7) on Monday.
