the aussie jordan thompsonnumber 87 in the world ranking, gave the surprise this Friday and struck down the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipasnumber three in the world, by winning 7-6(0), 4-6 and 7-6(5)in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters 1,000, shortly before the rain interrupted the schedule of matches.
Thompson signed one of the best games of his career and sealed his second victory against rivals that are part of the best ten in the ranking, after beating the British Andy Murray, then number one, at Queen’s in 2017. The Australian had eleven defeats in a row against rivals from the world ‘top-10’, but returned to show a great level of tennis after beating Frenchman Gael Monfils in the first round. Thompson took the first set tiebreaker with a resounding 7-0 scoreline and showed character in the third set, after Tsitsipas had a great reaction in the second set.
The Greek won the second set 6-4, with spectacular points that gave him momentum back, but in the decisive set Thompson did not tremble. Both players defended their respective serves and, in the tiebreaker, two errors with Tsitsipas’ forehand ended up being decisive. Thompson triumphed 7-5 and flew to the third round, in which he will face the Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, if he beats Maxime Cressy.
