The only 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva has in Wimbledon narrowly missed out on reaching the quarter-finals and left the pitch without saying a word after losing to Madison Key.
The Russian lost on Monday (07/10/23) to the American Madison Keys 6:3, 6:7 (4:7), 2:6 in the grass classic and was eliminated in the round of 16. For Andreyeva it was only the second participation in one Grand Slamtournament in her fledgling tennis career. Both French Open she had reached the third round in May.
Hailed as a new top talent
Keys converted her first match point in London after 2:02 hours. The 28-year-old, who played the tournament before Wimbledon in Eastbourne had won, will face the winner of the duel between world number two Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus and Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrowa in the fight for a place in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Despite her departure, Andreyeva is already being celebrated as a new top talent on the scene. In Wimbledon, the current number 102 in the world fought his way into the main draw through qualification and impressed with his powerful game. The young Russian also showed a strong performance against Keys and dominated the game for a long time. In the second set she was already in Break in front, but then apparently got to do with the nerves. After the lost tiebreak she threw her racket across the pitch and received a warning for it.
Keys uses weakness phase against bad loser
Keys took advantage of her opponent’s phase of weakness and reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2015 at Wimbledon. Before the match point, Andreyeva threw her racket onto the field again and received a point deduction. Without saying goodbye to the referee, the Russian left the pitch deeply disappointed after the defeat.
Mies is eliminated in doubles
Andreas Mies is also eliminated. The doubles specialist failed in the second round with his French partner Fabrice Martin. The two lost to Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek (Uruguay/Czech Republic) 6:7 (3:7) and 1:6 on Monday and thus missed the round of 16.
Injured competition: Medvedev and Rybakina in the quarterfinals
World number three Daniil Medvedev has reached the quarterfinals without a full match. With the Russian leading 6:4, 6:2, his Czech opponent Jiri Lehecka gave up due to injury immediately before the start of the third set.
Defending champion Jelena Rybakina also benefited from her opponent’s problems when she made it into the quarter-finals. After the Kazakhs made it 4-1 in the first set, Beatriz Haddad Maia from Brazil had to return to the changing room prematurely.
