23:13
Struff-Monteiro 3: 6 2: 1
Strong winner from Struffi! After a longer rally, Monteiro tries the backhand slice at 15:30 from his point of view. The German shoots him as a deep inside-out directly on the line. A return error later, the 2:1 is perfect.
23:10
Struff-Monteiro 3: 6 1: 1
Now the number 114 in the world is hitting the ground again. Again it’s a snap, in a few moments he’s ahead 40-0. Because he can send Struffi back and forth well and finish with the forehand from the half-field, it’s 1:1.
23:09
Struff Monteiro 3: 6 1: 0
The next round is underway, the Warsteiner opens with its own service. Monteiro hits the line with a backhand, so the ball bounces and irritates the German so much that he threw it into the net. However, he reacts great with two aces. A little later he has the 1-0 in his pocket.
23:01
Struff Monteiro 3: 6 0: 0
The first set goes to Monteiro! He goes 40:0 in front without any major problems and then places a great short cross stop on the line. Struff rushes over, but can no longer approach.
10:58 p.m
Struff-Monteiro 3: 5
It is now an absolute duty for the Warsteiner to hold this service game. However, he clearly has problems with Monteiro’s massive forehand. At 30:15, the 31-year-old is very lucky because Monteiro fires the forehand winner out of bounds from the half field. Despite two balls, the man from Fortaleza comes back into play and makes a debut. Two massive serves later, Struffi gets through the game.
22:52
Struff-Monteiro 2: 5
The Brazilian is currently in charge. He takes the 5:2 to zero and is only one game away from winning the set.
10:50 p.m
Struff-Monteiro 2: 4
Strong from Monteiro, who is lured to the net and plays a good lob there. Struff hammers it straight back onto the court, but the left-hander throws it back into the field, forcing his opponent to make a mistake. As a result, Struff makes mistakes that are too simple: first he throws a forehand sideways without needing it, then he doesn’t hit it properly and chases it into the net. He fends off the first breakball with the second serve and a kick variant. Then he moves up well after the short return and hits the forehand into Monteiro’s backhand. But he runs the thing and passes the Sauerland short-cross – strong as a buck!
10:44 p.m
Struff-Monteiro 2: 3
It remains difficult for Struff when the opponent serves. At 30:15, from his point of view, he falls a little short on the return and immediately collects the tough winner. Then he throws the return directly into the off. Due to a long backhand, Monteiro gets the crowd going wild again.
10:40 p.m
Struff-Monteiro 2:2
Annoying for Struffi, who, with his own service and 15: 0, chases a forehand into the sky with a frame hit. Then he tries a serve-and-volley – Monteiro counters with a great lob on the baseline and the following volley winner at the net. However, two aces from the right-hander is the correct answer before he is not ideal with a forehand and sends it too far. Debut, and here he boldly goes to the net to emotionally complete his opponent’s hard, but not well-placed backhand to his advantage. A little later he gets the balance in the games.
22:34
Struff-Monteiro 1:2
The German takes a lot of risks on the return. So he comes to 15:0, but has to accept the 15:40 thanks to good serves from his opponent and a volley that is difficult to take with a subsequent mistake. In the end, the South American bagged it 2-1 to 30.
10:30 p.m
Struff-Monteiro 1:1
Struff is also allowed to serve now. It starts off well too, as he can put a lot of pressure on after the serve with his forehand. After a slice placed off the line by his opponent and two quick points, he has three cue balls in his hand. He exploits the first with an ace.
22:28
Struff-Monteiro 0:1
It starts with a fight. With powerful surcharges, Monteiro secures the 40:30. But because Struffi remains stubborn, he forces his opponent to make a mistake and thus to make a debut. The local hero then conquered the next two points again. 1:0
22:24
Struff Monteiro 0-0
Let’s go, the Brazilian starts with his own service. Struff secures the first point with powerful forehand shots and the winner on the net.
21:55
Good start
Successful start for the DTB selection: Alexander Zverev has won his first individual. If Struff starts right now, things are already looking really good.
21:45
More game practice on clay
Today’s match takes place on the red ashes – and Monteiro has been able to gain significantly more match practice on this surface in recent weeks than Struff, who will play on sand for the first time in 2022. After his first round exit at the Australian Open (vs. Benoit Paire), the Brazilian only achieved an acceptable result with the quarter-finals in Santiago de Chile and can be found well behind Struffi in the world rankings. Maybe the experience on the sand is an advantage for him.
21:27
Slight weakness
Things are not going really well for the Germans in the current season. He has only had one win so far – at the ATP Cup in Sydney he beat the American John Isner (7: 6, 4: 6, 7: 5). Since then he went straight out in the first round in Adelaide (vs. Corentin Moutet), at the Australian Open (vs. Botic van den Zandschulp) and in Dubai (vs. Richard Berankis). Today the knot must finally burst.
21:06
