Tennis: Australian Open extended by one day

As of: October 3rd, 2023 10:06 a.m

The Australian Open will now extend over 15 instead of 14 days. The Grand Slam tournament in January will now begin on a Sunday.

By extending the competition calendar, night games, which have recently been a source of criticism from tennis players at Grand Slam tournaments, are to be avoided more. The organizers announced on Monday that the traditionally first Grand Slam tournament of the season will take place in Melbourne from January 14th to 28th.

The first round will then be played over three days

“We have listened to feedback from players and fans and are pleased to present a solution to minimize late decisions while ensuring a fair and equitable schedule at stadium pitches”said Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley. Accordingly, the first round will be played over three days instead of two.

The measure was justified by the fact that data analyzes had shown that matches were lasting longer and longer. The change to the start on Sunday is intended to reduce the pressure when scheduling. At the same time, the organizer also receives more income because more tickets can be sold.
