Tennis am Rothenbaum: Musetti wins the final against Alcaraz

As of: 07/24/2022 6:13 p.m

Lorenzo Musetti surprisingly won the final against the top seeded Carlos Alcaraz at the combined tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum. In the end it was 6: 4, 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 4 for the Italian. Tournament director Sandra Reichel drew a positive conclusion.

While the 19-year-old shooting star Alcaraz lost a match at ATP 500 tournaments, to which Hamburg belongs, for the first time this season, Musetti, who was a year older, immediately won his first ATP title when he took part in the final for the first time. He had already awarded five match points in the second set.

So far this year, Alcaraz has triumphed at the Masters tournaments in Miami and Madrid as well as in Rio and Barcelona.

Tournament boss Reichel expects black zero

Before the men’s final, tournament director Sandra Reichel had already drawn a positive conclusion from the first tennis doubles event at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum in 44 years. “It was the right decision to compete here with men and women in a tournament in one week,” said the Austrian.

With a total of 55,000 spectators in nine days, she expects a balanced financial balance thanks to the well-attended final weekend. “The final figures are not yet available. It’s going to be in the black, but we haven’t really made much money,” Reichel admitted.

Also in 2023 a combined tournament? “Signs Are Good”

She believes that the event will also be played in 2023 as a combined women’s and men’s tournament in the Hanseatic city. “I think the signs are good.” Especially since representatives of the WTA and ATP “didn’t think it would work as well as they told me. I assume that we will also have a good tournament here in 2023.”

What comes after that, however, is open. Peter-Michael Reichel and daughter Sandra hold the license for the women’s tournament and are authorized to organize the men’s tournament until 2023. In order for the double event to continue, both the men’s professional organization ATP and the women’s association WTA must agree.
