At the women’s and men’s combination tennis tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum, the number two seeded Russian Andrey Rublew has reached the round of 16. Croatia’s Borna Coric is one lap further.

Rublew, who won the tournament in Hamburg two years ago, had little trouble in his opening match on Wednesday against the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis and won 6:3, 6:4, hitting twelve aces. In the round of 16, the 24-year-old world number one meets Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, who only triumphed last Sunday at the clay court tournament in Bastad, Sweden.

Coric also won 6:3, 6:4 against the Dutchman Tallon Grieksoor, making him the first player in the men’s competition to reach the quarterfinals. The day before, top favorite Carlos Alcaraz had had significantly more difficulties with his opponent Nicola Kuhn, but also prevailed, as did Diego Schwartzman (Argentina), Fabio Fognini (Italy) and Pablo Carreno Busta (Spain). The defending champion can advance to the quarter-finals today with a win against Slovakian Alex Molcan.

Petkovic threatens a duel with Kontaveit

Andrea Petkovic is not in action in the women’s competition on Wednesday. The tournament ambassador is the last German in the tournament and made it into the quarterfinals on Tuesday with a 6:4, 6:3 against the Japanese Misako Doi 6:4, 6:3. There she is now threatened with a duel with number one seeded Anett Kontaveit if the Estonian prevails against the Swede Rebecca Peterson.

The Russians Alyaksandra Sasnovich and Anastassija Potapova and the Belgians Maryna Sanewska also reached the quarterfinals. Sasnowitsch defeated Serbian Aleksandra Krunic 6:3, 6:2, Potapova defeated Argentinian Maria Carlé 6:1, 6:4. Sanewska beat Romanian Alexandra Cadantu-Ignatik 6-4, 6-1.
