Ten years in prison for Russian tank driver who shot at apartment building in Ukraine | Abroad

A Ukrainian court has sentenced a Russian tank driver to 10 years in prison for shelling an apartment building. This is what the Ukrainian security service SBU says. Mikhail Kulikov was found guilty of ‘violation of the laws of war’ by the Chernihiv court. The sergeant has been imprisoned since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine.

According to the SBU, it was proved that the tank driver crossed the border into Belarus and invaded Ukraine on February 24. He then moved through heavily devastated area to the regional capital.

“On February 26, he followed an order from his commander and shelled an 11-storey apartment building. There were several civilians in it. Several apartments were heavily damaged,” said the SBU. Shortly afterwards, the tank was seized and the sergeant arrested.

From life to 15 years in prison

In May, Ukrainian prosecutors sentenced a Russian non-commissioned officer (21) to life for murdering a civilian, a sentence that was reduced to 15 years in prison on appeal. It was the first Russian soldier to be convicted of war crimes since the start of the invasion of Ukraine.

Two soldiers accused of attacking two villages near Kharkiv with rockets have already been jailed for 11 years. Several other soldiers are still awaiting trial or a verdict in their case.
