Ten times more likely to have ‘mega fires’ in Europe due to a warming climate: “At + 2.0 °C, Northern Europe should also be more careful”

Forest fires are becoming increasingly common and widespread in Europe. A new study has now calculated that certain European areas are ten times more likely to experience catastrophic ‘megafires’ if the climate experiences moderate warming. If we go even further and exceed the + 2 °C threshold, even more Europeans will have to deal with forest fires. But which areas are we talking about? And what is the precise impact of climate change on forest fires? Climatologist Lander Van Tricht explains exactly what this study tells us.
