Trainer Erik ten Hag had mixed feelings after Ajax’s draw in the away match against Benfica (2-2) in the eighth finals of the Champions League. “To draw 2-2 in an away game is quite a good result,” he said. “But there would have been more. That’s why I have an ambiguous feeling.”
“We had chances to make it 1-3”, Ten Hag alluded to a shot on the post by Edson Álvarez. “But also a shot from Mazraoui that catches the goalkeeper well and a possibility from Gravenberch. We should have done more with that.”
Ajax lost a lead twice in Estádio da Luz. “That first goal was unfortunate”, Ten Hag referred to an own goal by Sébastien Haller. “But we didn’t do well at 2-2. That was naive. Two defenders of ours were in the attack. Then we don’t feel the game well.”
“We should have done better here,” said Ten Hag. “But with this result I see sufficient perspective for the return on March 15 in our own stadium. We can do much better, we have to show that.”
