Temporarily no 500 euros if you delete your number plate as a resident of Bruges
Since April last year, people from Bruges who got rid of their car could receive a premium of 500 euros. The city thus followed other cities and municipalities, such as Kortrijk.
The residents could then use the money to buy a new bicycle or a subscription for public transport. For example, the city wanted to encourage its residents to travel in a sustainable manner.
Budget has run out
A budget of 100,000 euros was provided, or 200 cars. Almost 150 people have already signed up for the premium and 81 applications have already been received for this year. It is clear that many residents of Bruges are making the switch to cycling or car sharing, instead of owning a car.
Because the city council had provided the 100,000 euros until 2025, they cannot approve all applications. That is why the city is temporarily putting the subsidies on hold until extra money is found.
