Temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius: World Cup schedule in Budapest changed for Wednesday

Status: 08/22/2023 1:55 p.m

Due to a heat warning for Wednesday (08/23/2023), some competitions of the World Championships in Athletics will be postponed in Budapest. This also applies to DLV sprinter Joshua Hartmann.

As the world athletics association World Athletics announced on Tuesday (08/22/2023), the schedule of the morning competitions will be adjusted due to the extreme weather conditions. Temperatures in the Hungarian capital are expected to rise to more than 30 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. “This is unacceptable for our athletes,” it said in a statement. Accordingly, the women’s 5,000 m heats will not start at just after 11 a.m. as originally planned, but only in the evening at just after 7 p.m. German runners are not registered for these races.

As a result of the relocation, the preliminary heats over the 200 m in the morning will also start a little earlier than previously planned. The German champion Joshua Hartmann from Cologne will start at 12.15 instead of 12.50.

Storm at the start of the World Cup

Even at the beginning of the World Cup, the weather conditions in Budapest had caused problems for the World Cup organizers. Last Saturday (August 19th, 2023), the medal race of the walkers over 20 km had to be started two hours later because a storm with heavy rain and thunderstorms had hit the city. For this reason, the competitions in the stadium also started an hour later.
