Streaming services Viaplay and HBO Max have both attracted at least half a million subscribers within a month of their arrival in the Netherlands, market researcher Telecompaper reports. At the end of the first quarter, about 7 percent of Dutch households had a subscription to Viaplay, where, among other things, Formula 1 can be watched, and about 8 percent paid for series and films on HBO Max.
Telecompaper calls the introduction of the new streaming services ‘successful’. Both started in early March. The market researcher attributes the success to, among other things, introductory discounts that the services had to attract consumers. For example, HBO Max gave ’50 percent discount for life’ according to Telecompaper.
The arrival of the new services has not yet resulted in a decrease in the number of subscribers to payment services that have been in existence for some time. Ziggo Sport Totaal, which hosted Formula 1 last year, saw that the growth of paying customers from previous quarters stagnated. About 1 percent of Dutch households watch Formula 1 driver Max Verstappen via F1 TV Pro, another provider of car races.
Slight growth
Netflix again has about 43 percent of households in the Netherlands as a subscriber. That is a slight increase after a small decline in the second quarter of last year, Telecompaper writes. Last month, Netflix spoke for the first time of a decline in the number of paying users worldwide. Competitors Videoland, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video all show continued growth.
Three out of ten Dutch people now pay for at least two streaming services. This applies to more than half of the respondents among people under the age of 35.
