Frankfurt (Reuters) – Telecom companies believe that the reasons for the coverage gaps in the German mobile network complained about by the regulator are beyond their control. Telefonica Deutschland and Vodafone announced on Monday that they had met the expansion goals of the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) wherever this was legally and factually possible. Cell phone towers could only have been set up at a few locations. Deutsche Telekom could not initially be reached for comment.
In September, the BNetzA initiated fine proceedings against the three companies “due to their culpable failure to fully comply with the supply requirements on time”. This emerges from a report available to the Reuters news agency. Those affected now have the opportunity to make an official statement. At the same time, the companies were given a grace period until the middle of next year in order to fully comply with the requirements. An authority spokesman did not want to provide any information about the amount of possible fines.
At the same time, another fine procedure is underway against 1&1. The subsidiary of United Internet is lagging far behind the requirements in setting up its own mobile network. 1&1 has now submitted a statement. This is currently being examined.
